Didier Reynders concerned about situation in northern Iraq

date: 08 August 2014

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders is still deeply worried about the situation in northern Iraq. Indeed, the fate of the civilian population concerns us all. A greater involvement of the international community is therefore essential, both from a humanitarian and a security point of view. The Minister therefore supports all initiatives to protect civilians, especially from the UN Security Council or the UN Human Rights Council.

Just as during his meeting with a delegation of the Support Committee for Eastern Christians of 30 July, the Minister again condemns the cruelties and crimes committed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) against civilians, including women, children and religious minorities.

Together with the European Union, Belgium calls on Iraqi political forces to quickly form a broad-based government that can respond to the population’s needs and expectations. The formation of a broad-based government is the best way to move forward and join forces against the ISIS.
