Didier Reynders welcomes Fouad Massoum's election as President of the Republic of Iraq

date: 26 July 2014

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders, just as EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, welcomes the election of Fouad Massoum as president of the Republic of Iraq. After the election of Salim Al-Juburi as Chairman of the Council of Representatives, this is an extra step in the formation of a new government.

The Minister stressed that the Iraq crisis primarily requires a political solution. He therefore encourages the Iraqi leaders to form as soon as possible a government with all ethnic and religious communities in the country. The formation of a broad-based government of national reconciliation is the best way to form a united front against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). ISIS is a terrorist organisation responsible for numerous atrocities in the territory it controls, especially against minorities, including Christians.

Moreover, Didier Reynders is concerned about reports saying that ISIS wants to introduce female genital mutilation for children and women from 11 to 46 years old in the territory that the terrorist organisation controls.

Belgium supports Iraq in its fight against terrorism with respect for human rights and international humanitarian law.
