Didier Reynders takes note of formation of Palestinian government
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders and High Representative Catherine Ashton take note of the announcement made by President Abbas about the formation of a government of national consensus headed by Prime Minister Hamdallah. He hopes that this new team, composed of unaffiliated members, will be a milestone for reconciliation among the Palestinians.
For Minister Reynders Belgian support of a Palestinian government will depend on the recognition of the principle of non-violence and the two-State solution based on the 1967 borders. Furthermore, the government needs to keep recognizing Israel and adhere to previous agreements and commitments.
Didier Reynders adds that Belgium stands ready to help the Palestinian government develop their economy as part of the peace process. For Belgium that peace process is pressing.
