Didier Reynders welcomes the successful holding of elections in Ukraine

date: 27 May 2014

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders welcomes the successful holding of the first round of the presidential elections in Ukraine, despite the difficult circumstances facing the country. The population gave a clear and positive signal in favour of stability, peace and development.

It is unfortunate that the expression of the democratic right to vote could not take place in Crimea and in some parts of the country, due to the occupation or because of uncontrolled demonstrators preventing the elections there .

If actual results are confirmed, a second round will not be required. Belgium wishes to establish an extensive cooperation with the newly elected authorities in a European framework.

The Minister hopes that this result will contribute to the unity of the country. He calls for an inclusive process of national reconciliation, respect for all communities and of democratic principles, in accordance with European values.

Didier Reynders also congratulates the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) for the strong support given to the organisation of these elections. He thanks all observers for their contribution to their success.
