Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders has learned with great sadness of the demise of His Excellency, Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa.
President Mandela, "Madiba" as he was called by his people, will be remembered as an icon of peace, reconciliation and visionary statesmanship, reaching far beyond his term as first President of a democratic South Africa. Under his leadership, South Africa saw an end to apartheid and the restoration of human dignity. He succeeded in peacefully transforming a deeply divided country into a Rainbow Nation, often personally and physically paying a high price along this “Long Walk to Freedom”.
"During my latest visit to South Africa, I realized how much Nelson Mandela remains a source of inspiration to all people in South Africa, across Africa and worldwide. He embodied the kind of leadership and vision that many aspire to.  I hope that his example will still lead young generations in perpetuating his legacy of reconciliation and tolerance", says the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
On behalf of the Belgian government, Didier Reynders would like to express his sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to his family and to the authorities and the people of South Africa.
