date: 14 June 2013

In Brussels today, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders met with Iurie Leanca, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, and his colleague, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Natalia Gherman. Didier Reynders congratulated the Prime Minister on his recent appointment, which brought an end to the political crisis in Moldova.

They discussed bilateral relations and stated their satisfaction regarding police cooperation and increased trade between both countries. Didier Reynders confirmed to Prime Minister Leanca that he would pay a visit to Moldova in early September with his Benelux colleagues.

Relations between Moldova and the European Union were also discussed. Minister Reynders expressed his appreciation of reform efforts in Moldova in the framework of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership. The reforms are being carried out with a view to signing an Association Agreement and a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement. Negotiations in this respect have just been completed. Belgium has always advocated a rapprochement between Moldova and the European Union in the framework of the Eastern Partnership.

Visa liberalisation was discussed to round off the meeting. Didier Reynders stated that Moldova first has to implement the European Action Plan before further steps can be undertaken in this regard.
