Didier Reynders meets Mary Robinson, United Nations Special Envoy to the Great Lakes
Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders met with the United Nations Special Envoy to the Great Lakes, Mrs Mary Robinson.
Mary Robinson was formerly President of Ireland and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. It is exactly a month since she was appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to provide support to the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Region.
The Minister and the Special Envoy discussed the situation in the Region, as well as Mary Robinson’s mission to the countries covered by the agreement. Robinson and Reynders stressed the importance of dialogue in order to build trust between the countries concerned.
It is essential that commitments are met if the suffering of the population is to cease and the cycle of violence to be ended. Special attention must be paid to the situation of women, who are the primary victims of this violence.
Didier Reynders reiterated Belgium’s readiness, as a partner country to the Addis Ababa agreement, to support Mrs Robinson in the execution of her mandate.
