As a founding member of the United Nations, Belgium has always approached it as the effective tool for multilateralism in order to respond to the increasing number of challenges. It is a great privilege for me to serve my country and the international community along this line.     Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders welcomes the signature of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali by the Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA), during the ceremony organised in Bamako on 20 June, under the high protection of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. Didier Reynders acknowledges the courage and the determination of all parties in Mali to invest in the process of national reconciliation and refoundation of the Malian state. Without this process, no sustainable socio-economic development is possible.

  • A great gift for Amaretch

    Amaretch (29) is a single Ethiopian mother of two, who lives with her parents. To cultivate her 0.75 acres of land, she stands alone. In her region, Tigray, women may own land, but they are not allowed to plough it. It must be done by a man who is then entitled to receive half the harvest. Such practice is not exactly beneficial for food security in a region where 30 to 40% of the households are female headed. Tigray lost many men under the Derg regime and during the war with Eritrea. Fortunately Amaretch was able to rely on the programme of Caritas and ADCS.

  • International meeting of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies starts in Brussels

    The meeting of the Heads of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies for the European region (HONLEA Europe) started this morning in the Egmont Palace in Brussels. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders is pleased that Belgium is organizing this meeting. HONLEA is an organization of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This organization promotes international cooperation on drugs policies and the fight against organized crime. In this way, the United Nations acknowledges the Belgian expertise on the fight against drugs.
