  • Didier Reynders offers his condolences following the passing away of Justin-Marie Bomboko, the first minister of Foreign Affairs of the Independent State of the Congo

    It is with great sadness that Vice-Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders learned of the death of Justin-Marie Bomboko Lokumba, who passed away today in UCL Saint-Luc in Brussels. Bomboko, born in 1928, was together with Patrice Lumumba looked upon as the father of the Independent State of the Congo. He was co-signer of the Act of Independence of the Congo on 30 June 1960. Didier Reynders acknowledges the positive role played by Justin Bomboko during the tumultuous years following the country’s declaration of independence. For his role in that momentous event, he was in 1963 awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown.

  • Didier Reynders concluded the Brussels Genocide Prevention Conference today

    At the initiative of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, Didier Reynders, an international conference was convened in Brussels on 31 March and on 1 April 2014 to determine ways and means to rid mankind of the scourge of genocides, the most serious violation of international humanitarian and human rights law. This was organized in cooperation with the African Union, the European Union and the United Nations.

    Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders congratulates the former Norwegian Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg, on his appointment as the new Secretary General of NATO starting in October. His appointment comes at an important time marked by major challenges facing the alliance. Minister Reynders is confident that the new Secretary General, due to his long political and international experience, is the appropriate person to lead NATO. He wishes Jens Stoltenberg every success in his work. NATO may continue to rely on Belgium. Didier Reynders also thanks the current Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, for his many years of commitment.

    On 31 March, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders exchanged the instruments of ratification with the Assistant Foreign Minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi, and the representative of Luxembourg relating to the bilateral agreement on the protection and promotion of investments between the Belgo-Luxembourg Economic Union (BLUE) and Qatar.

    At the invitation of the Belgian King, the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, from 30 March to 1 April 2014 paid a visit to the Kingdom of Belgium. President Xi Jinping met with the King as well as with the President of the Chamber of Representatives, André Flahaut, and attended a meeting with Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo. The visit offered the opportunity to draw up a favourable balance sheet of the friendly exchanges between China and Belgium.

    BRUSSELS, 31 March 2014 - At the initiative of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Belgium is holding an International Conference on Genocide Prevention in Brussels, today and tomorrow. This is done in cooperation with the African Union, the European Union and the United Nations. Representatives of more than 100 States and International Organizations participate. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, will close the works on Tuesday.

    It was with sadness that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders learned of the deaths of 108 people who lost their lives in a shipwreck on the Ugandan side of Lake Albert on Monday 24 March. Most of the people on board were Congolese refugees who wished to return to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
