Didier Reynders calls for calm and dialogue in Ukraine
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders is closely following the tense situation and protests in Ukraine. He supports the statement made by High Representative Catherine Ashton and European Commissioner Stefan Füle (responsible for enlargement).
Minister Reynders calls upon all parties to exercise restraint. Provocation and violence must be avoided while freedom of expression and of the press may not be curtailed. Civil rights and freedoms must also continue to be respected.
Didier Reynders hopes that an investigation into the use of force by the police will be carried out as quickly as possible. The government must hold discussions with all political forces in order to find a peaceful solution to the crisis.
The minister hopes that Ukraine will continue to invest in its relationship with the EU and that it will continue to work on making progress on the three themes that are important to the two partners: reform of the electoral system, the fight against the arbitrary administration of justice, and reforms for the implementation of the Association Agenda.
