Didier Reynders pleased with step towards new migration and asylum policy in Morocco

date: 17 September 2013

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders expressed his satisfaction with the report of the Moroccan National Council for Human Rights on the accommodation of migrants from that country’s sub-Saharan region. The findings of the report were approved by King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

The report’s recommendations are completely in line with the objectives of the Mobility Partnership concluded in June between Morocco and the European Union. Belgium is also a signatory to this Partnership.

Our country has always paid close attention to the international protection regime set out in the 1951 Refugee Convention and to the fundamental role played by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Belgium is pleased that Morocco, represented by the highest of authorities, has decided to deal with migration issues in a comprehensive and humane manner.

Belgium uses the same approach and welcomes Morocco’s new asylum and migration policy.
