Didier Reynders on the elections in Mali

date: 29 July 2013

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders congratulates the Malian population for its participation in large numbers in the first round of the country’s presidential elections on 28 July, which took place in a calm and dignified atmosphere. In spite of the difficult circumstances of the poll, in particular the challenges involved in enabling refugees or displaced persons to effectively vote, it appears at first glance that the voting process went smoothly. This state of affairs confirms the Malian population’s need for peace and democracy.

Didier Reynders is looking forward to receiving the conclusions of the election observation missions, and in particular that of the European Union.

It is important to foster this opportunity for peace and stability throughout the country. The Malian authorities and population can continue to count on Belgium’s support in this respect.
