Didier Reynders hopes for a new relationship between Iran and the international community following the election of Hassan Rohani
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders has taken note of the election of Mr Hassan Rohani as the new President of Iran after the first round of elections. He is pleased with the turnout by Iranians at the polls and the fact that the election process went well, despite the fact that various potential candidates were not authorised to participate.
Like EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, Minister Reynders is of the opinion that Mr Hassan Rohani has received a strong mandate. He hopes that his election as President will lead to an improvement in the social-economic situation and human rights in Iran. The Minister also expressed his hope that tensions in the region will decrease and that a diplomatic solution will quickly be found for the Iranian nuclear issue.
