Didier Reynders condemns North Korea’s latest nuclear test

date: 12 February 2013

Just like High Representative Catherine Ashton, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders condemns the nuclear test carried out by North Korea. This action by the country has violated the UN Security Council’s resolution.

This nuclear test endangers the non-proliferation regime, as was the case with the rocket launch in December of last year and previous provocations. North Korea’s behaviour cannot go unchecked. Belgium will, together with the international community, and above all with the European Union, work on generating a response to the new, unacceptable provocations. Belgium is also awaiting a response from the Security Council.

Minister Reynders calls on North Korea to discontinue its nuclear weapons programme. Only by complying with international requirements and by carrying out a dialogue with the international community can North Korea break through from its isolation and create conditions for sustainable peace and security on the Korean peninsula.
