Paul Magnette meets with the Director General of the FAO, José Graziano da Silva

date: 11 October 2012

Today, Minister Paul Magnette met with the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Mr José Graziano da Silva. The Organization plays a leading role at international level in the fight against hunger and poverty. The FAO is one of the 20 partner organizations of Belgian multilateral cooperation: our country is the third-largest donor as far as humanitarian projects are concerned and the eighth-largest donor in general. In 2012, the contribution from the Belgian Development Cooperation was more than EUR 15 million.

The mandate of the FAO consists of increasing the standard of living by taking measures to reduce malnutrition, to raise agricultural productivity and to increase the quality of life of the rural population. The Organization also functions as a knowledge centre and offers technical assistance by offering its members expertise in the field of sustainable agriculture and food safety.

Minister Magnette congratulated Mr da Silva on his nomination as Director General in January of this year. He assured him that Belgium would continue to attach importance to multilateral cooperation and that our country will continue to support the FAO in its fight against cyclical food crises and for the eradication of hunger and malnutrition.
