Belgian diplomat appointed EU Senior Coordinator for Great Lakes region
Belgian diplomat, Koen Vervaeke (52), has been appointed by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, to be Senior Coordinator for the Great Lakes region and will serve in Ashton’s diplomatic corps.
Last summer Vervaeke was appointed as a Head of Delegation within the European External Action Service, the name by which that diplomatic department is officially known. He was given responsibility for the Horn of Africa, East and Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region. He now additionally takes on his new role as Senior Coordinator for the Great Lakes region.
In his new capacity, he will take the lead concerning the European Union’s policy on the Great Lakes Countries: Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He will also coordinate all EU political activity in the region.
