  • 150 years of friendship between Belgium and Japan

    In 2016, Belgium and Japan will celebrate 150 years of diplomatic relations and friendship. In the run-up to this year of friendship, a public competition is being held to select the official anniversary logo. The competition is open to any resident of Belgium or Japan, as well as to all holders of Belgian or Japanese citizenship. The deadline for entries is 20 December 2014.

    The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo, the Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health Maggie De Block and Ebola coordinator Dr. Erika Vlieghe met on Thursday 30 October with Samantha Power, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations. Ambassador Samantha Power conducted the past few days a field visit to the three West African countries most affected by Ebola: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. She shared her experiences with the two Belgian ministers.

  • Burundi: support for health and training

    On 22 October, the Belgian ambassador to Burundi, Marc Gedopt, signed two specific conventions, one under the framework of the Institutional Support Programme to the Health sector, the other in the framework of the Support to Vocational and Technical Education programme. In Burundi, the Belgian Development Agency (CTB) and the responsible ministries will be in charge of the implementation of the achievements of these two conventions.

    Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders welcomes the successful holding of early parliamentary elections in Ukraine on Sunday, which consolidated the democratisation process. The OSCE Election Observation Mission stated that international standards for democratic elections were met. Belgium welcomes the successful efforts by the Ukrainian authorities to ensure that the elections were conducted peacefully, freely and openly, despite the difficult conditions.
