date: 18 June 2014

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders welcomes the nomination of Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein, after approval by the United Nations General Assembly, as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In September, Prince Zeid will succeed Ms Navanethem Pillay, with whom Belgium has had excellent cooperation. The Minister met her on many occasions and would like to underline her remarkable work in the defence of human rights. During her six years in office, Ms Pillay contributed actively to strengthening the promotion, protection and respect for human rights throughout the world, in international institutions as well as in the field.

Minister Reynders congratulates Prince Zeid on his nomination and looks forward to continuing the excellent collaboration with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Office enjoys the complete confidence of Belgium, for its independence as well as for its integrity.

The promotion, protection and respect for human rights are a priority for Belgian foreign policy. Didier Reynders counts on the Office of the High Commissioner to continue to fulfil an important role in this regard on the international stage.
