Didier Reynders condemns acts of violence in Nigeria

date: 08 May 2014

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders has added his support to the complete condemnation of the increasing abductions and mass murders that are being carried out by armed Islamic group Boko Haram in Nigeria.

The slaughter on Monday of hundreds of people in a market in the north of the country follows on from the abduction of 279 girls a few weeks ago. These are immoral and despicable acts. Mere outrage, however, is not enough. The international community must help the Nigerian government bring an end to this type of violence, which has resulted in hundreds of victims. It undermines the right of young people to be educated and the fundamental values of a constitutional state.

Didier Reynders is endorsing the international declaration of support for the Nigerian population and welcomes the proposals for assistance.
