Land mines: Didier Reynders is pleased that Oman will be the 162nd State Party to the Ottawa Treaty

On the occasion of his meeting with Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders, His Excellency Youssef bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has announced that the Sultanate of Oman will accede to the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty.

Oman will be the 162nd State Party. Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid, as Special Envoy of the Ottawa Treaty, is very closely involved in the action against mines. She and Didier Reynders congratulated the Oman authorities with their decision, which they publicly announced in the presence of the Belgian delegation.

Minister Reynders urged Oman to start the accession process in view of the preparation of the third Review Conference, which is due to take place in Maputo, Mozambique, in June 2014.

Belgium will assume the Vice Presidency of the Maputo Conference as well as the Presidency of the 14th General Assembly of the State Parties in Geneva in 2015.
