Didier Reynders condemns violence in Ukraine

date: 19 February 2014

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders condemns the violent and worrisome escalation of the protests in Kiev. He deplores the loss of human lives, injuries sustained, cases of missing persons, torture and intimidation. Minister Reynders presents his deepest condolences to all the families and friends of those who died.

Like President Herman Van Rompuy and High Representative Catherine Ashton, Didier Reynders calls on all responsible to cease the violence immediately. The perpetrators of violence and human rights violations must be prosecuted. There must be an absolute commitment to the rule of law, as well as respect for fundamental freedoms. Minister Reynders wants appropriate action at EU level, such as sanctions to stop the violence.

For Belgium, the only solution lies in dialogue. Such a dialogue should lead to a new government that prepares democratic elections for the Ukrainian population.
