date: 10 October 2013

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders is delighted that the European Parliament has awarded the 25th Sakharov human rights prize to Malala Yousafzai.

Minister Reynders welcomes the exceptional personality of the 16-year-old Pakistani who certainly deserves this prize for human rights and democracy. This distinction is not only for her, but also for millions of other young people around the world whose human rights are violated or simply denied, especially regarding education.

The education of girls is what Malala Yousafzai is fighting for. It is also the most effective tools in the fight against authoritarianism and for freedom and development.
