Reaction to President Obama’s speech in Berlin

date: 19 June 2013

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders welcomes President Obama’s announcement regarding further, specific steps towards a world without nuclear weapons.

Belgium shares this vision and participates in this respect within NATO and in the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. With this proposal, a further major reduction in the US and Russia’s arsenals of strategic nuclear weapons is one step closer. Belgium also hopes that the US and Russia will start negotiations as soon as possible on reductions in non-strategic nuclear weapons.

It is encouraging that, in spite of current tensions and insecurity in certain parts of the world, the message of peace through nuclear disarmament remains high on the agenda. Belgium calls on all countries to rally around this message and contribute actively to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and therefore to a safer world for everyone.
