Minister Reynders expresses his condolences on the death of Stéphane Hessel

date: 27 February 2013

It was with sadness that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders learned of the death of Stéphane Hessel.

This member of the French Resistance, who was taken prisoner in WWII and endured the horrors of the concentration camps, became a champion of human rights. He helped draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and wrote the book Indignez-vous! (Time for Outrage!). He was made an honorary citizen of Brussels in 2011.

Stéphane Hessel, a man who always remained faithful to his convictions and always stood up for them, is, Didier Reynders feels, an example for us all.

Minister Reynders expressed his sympathy to the family and friends of Stéphane Hessel and extended his condolences.
