Didier Reynders condemns North Korea’s missile launch

date: 12 December 2012

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders condemns the new missile launch being carried out by North Korea. To him, this is a breach of Security Council resolutions, which undermines the international rule of law. The Minister is awaiting an appropriate response from the Security Council.

Belgium therefore shares the international concern and indignation expressed over this act by North Korea, and backs the declaration made by the EU High Representative Catherine Ashton.

In the Minister’s view, this provocation risks increasing tensions in East Asia, and runs counter to the objective of the Six-Party Talks (the United States of America, Russia, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) to find a diplomatic solution to the North Korean nuclear programme.

Didier Reynders calls on North Korea to adopt a responsible policy. This is the only way the North Korean authorities can avoid isolating the country, and seek to improve life for their impoverished people.
