DRC: Minister Reynders regrets the suspension of Radio Okapi transmissions

date: 03 December 2012

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders regrets the decision by the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to suspend the broadcasts of Radio Okapi for four days. This radio station plays an important role in spreading useful and neutral information to the local population. By virtue of this key role in promoting peace and human rights, Belgium supports the activities of Radio Okapi.

The minister hopes that a quick solution can be found to resume broadcasts, which appear to have been interrupted for administrative reasons with no apparent serious grounds.

The broadcasts are all the more important at this time to the population of North Kivu, who are fleeing from fighting, abuse and violence.
