date: 12 November 2012

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Benelux countries are very pleased with the outcome of the Doha Conference of the Syrian opposition. The ministers declare that the creation of the Syrian National Coalition is a milestone in forming an inclusive and representative opposition. “We have confidence in the leadership of Moaz al-Khatib to unite the Syrian opposition on a path to a peaceful and democratic Syria for all Syrians”.

The ministers stressed the importance of women participation in the Syrian opposition and applaud the appointment Ms. Atassi as vice-president in that regard.

The Benelux have been calling for the creation of a broad platform of Syrian opposition groups, as a credible alternative to the regime of president Assad and to lay the foundations of a new Syria.

The Benelux ministers express their hope that this major development will contribute to UN-Arab League representative L. Brahimi’s efforts to find a political solution to the crisis.

As the humanitarian crisis in Syria deepens, the Benelux ministers urge all parties to respect international humanitarian law, in particular the unimpeded access of the population to medical facilities.
