Encouraging meeting of the ICGLR in Kampala

date: 22 November 2012

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders is delighted with the meeting of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), held in Kampala by President Museveni (Uganda) and in particular by the meeting at this event between President Kabila (DRC) and President Kagame (Rwanda). Given the gravity of the situation, the minister welcomes the adoption of a joint statement requesting that the M23 immediately stops all fighting and withdraws as quickly as possible.

Above all it is the Congolese people who require protection and help.  Didier Reynders therefore hopes that this joint appeal will be heard and put into effect as soon as possible. He also hopes that this meeting will signal the start of broader dialogue between the protagonists, and pave the way for sustainable solutions to put an end to this crisis while avoiding the mistakes of the past.

The Minister is pleased with the adoption of Resolution 2076 of the Security Council, which contains elements that should help to end the crisis in the eastern DRC, and calls for its full implementation.
