Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders strongly condemns the cowardly bomb attack in Beirut in which Brigadier General Wissam El-Hassan and several others lost their lives.

The Minister expresses his sympathy to the families of the victims and his thoughts are with the people who are wounded. The Minister also wishes to express his sympathy to the population and government of Lebanon.

It is the fervent wish of Minister Reynders that the perpetrators be brought to justice as quickly as possible.

He also supports the statement made by High Representative Catherine Ashton to preserve calm in the country and to continue down the path towards stabilisation, dialogue and peace in Lebanon. The stability and unity of the country and also of the region may not be endangered by this sort of cowardly deed, Minister Reynders stated.
