Didier Reynders meets Commissioner Ramtane Lamamra of the African Union

date: 04 October 2012

Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders met Mr Ramtane Lamamra, the African Union’s Commissioner for Peace and Security. They spoke primarily of the conflict situations and joint peace initiatives on the African continent.

Minister Reynders and Commissioner Lamamra exchanged thoughts on the possibilities for the European Union and its Member States to be part of an international strategy for the crisis in the Sahel Region, in cooperation with ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations.

They also felt that the crisis in North Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo) must be brought to an end, in part through political dialogue between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and during the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. Such dialogue can count on the support of the African Union and Belgium.

Minister Reynders and Commissioner Lamamra are pleased with the agreement recently signed between the Sudanese President al-Bashir and his South Sudanese counterpart Kiir on the basis of the African Union’s step-by-step plan (April 2012). They are also hopeful for the difficult stabilisation process in Somalia.
